Designed to Expand the Use of Ad-Hoc, Proximity-Based Connectivity within Wireless Apps

SAN DIEGO – February 9, 2011 – Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. (QuIC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today announced the launch of the AllJoyn™ open source project, which is a peer-to-peer technology framework that enables ad-hoc, proximity-based, device-to-device communication without the use of an intermediary server. AllJoyn is designed to easily allow developers to create apps and services that leverage P2P connectivity, which can be established using any short-range radio link such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth™, on any AllJoyn-enabled device without the need for a 3G network or Wi-Fi Internet access point.

AllJoyn is designed to solve many of the complexities that currently exist in the peer-to-peer space; for example, the technology addresses transparent device and service discovery, networking functionality, message routing and also provides a security framework for encrypted and authenticated communications. By simplifying how devices connect and interact, AllJoyn allows for a superior user experience with easy discovery among devices, simplified group formation and low latency, regardless of how the wireless connection is established.

“QuIC is excited to launch the AllJoyn open source project with the hope that it will drive innovation and creativity by empowering developers and device manufacturers to create new types of user experiences that expand the use of peer-to-peer technology beyond just traditional wireless handsets,” said Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. “AllJoyn technology has the ability to help mainstream proximity-based P2P connectivity and we look forward to the industry participating in this open source project to help us evolve the technology.”

Using the AllJoyn SDK, developers are able to enhance their apps and services by integrating P2P functionality, providing manufacturers the opportunity to differentiate their consumer offering. In addition, the technology is designed to be platform independent and open source, presenting developers with a potentially large addressable device ecosystem. Potential applications of the technology could include peer-to-peer gaming, secure file sharing, extended set-top box functionality or in-vehicle infotainment.

QuIC will demonstrate AllJoyn P2P technology at GSMA’s Mobile World Congress in the Company’s exhibit, located in Exhibit Hall 8, #8B53. Those who wish to contribute to the AllJoyn source code or download the AllJoyn SDK can do so at www.alljoyn.org. The source code for the AllJoyn open source project and the associated binary SDK are available under the Apache License Version 2.0.

Deal Enhances Ability to Deliver Integrated Services that Optimize Network Usage, Provide Better User Experiences and Improve Battery Life

SAN DIEGO – October 13, 2010 – Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. (QuIC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today announced it has acquired iSkoot Technologies Inc., a newly-formed corporation that has recently received substantially all of the assets of iSkoot, Inc., a San Francisco-based pioneer of providing services at the intersection of mobile and the internet. iSkoot works with leading device manufacturers and U.S. mobile operators to bring popular social networks and new internet services to mobile handsets in an intelligent manner that reduces data bandwidth usage on the network and saves battery life on phones.

iSkoot is now a subsidiary of QuIC, Qualcomm’s subsidiary focused on enabling and optimizing open source software with Qualcomm technologies, and will focus on three areas: continued support of its current customers; integrating its offerings with Qualcomm’s products; ,and developing open source data management contributions for mobile devices.

iSkoot began in 2005 with the simple premise that internet services would be even better if they worked on the handsets most people use today and over wireless networks most people can access.

iSkoot’s Kalaida™ Platform is architected to move data-intensive tasks through iSkoot-managed proxy servers. The proxy servers intelligently transcode and aggregate the traffic such that the actual frequency and size (number of megabytes transmitted) of data transmissions is greatly reduced. By this method, Kalaida brings the power of cloud computing to consumer mobile devices and gives operators the ability to deliver compelling interactive experiences with minimal impact on network and handset performance.

“iSkoot and their products match our strategy to optimize the delivery of any service over a wireless network and deliver true business value to our partners and customers,” said Rob Chandhok, president of QuIC. “QuIC’s acquisition of iSkoot provides us with a push data services platform, a social network aggregation solution and voice 2.0 services that dramatically strengthens our ability to continue providing the most effective mobile solutions for operators and device makers as they serve consumers worldwide.”

“iSkoot and QuIC share a fundamental passion for creating deeply-integrated mobile experiences that work in the real world,” said Mark Jacobstein, CEO of iSkoot. “Joining forces allows QuIC and iSkoot to equip mobile operators and device manufacturers with integrated offerings that create great experiences for end users with minimum impact on network and handset resources.”

Since its inception, iSkoot has mobilized many of the internet’s most popular services, like social networks, consumer email and IM. Leading U.S. operators offer iSkoot services, such as a free mobile app that aggregates access to social networks, customizable news feeds and consumer email services within a single application.

As another school year rapidly approaches and I once again marvel at how quickly my kids are growing up, I can’t help but realize how much events in one’s professional life reflect those in one’s personal life, but with a few interesting differences. For example, we all know that at some point, our kids will reach the age where it’s off to college, time to find a job, travel the world, etc. In other words, they are growing up and beginning their lives as adults.

All parents go through this at some point. You’ve done your job: you’ve raised them, given them your love and attention — and then you send them off to make their own mark in the world. In the world of technology though, a very different relationship exists when it comes to some engineers and their inventions. Oftentimes in this industry you’ll see individuals cling to outmoded or obsolete technology longer than they should simply because it’s their own creation.

Instead of letting go and moving on, we somehow think this chunk of code can be ‘re-factored’ or ‘extended’ to do something it was never intended to do. (The same applies to HW, btw) In all the years I’ve been in this industry, the number of times I’ve seen this drama play out is amazing.

Why someone would be fine with sending their own flesh and blood out into the world on their own, but would ferociously cling to an inanimate collection of 1s and 0s is beyond me. It’s the equivalent of having a live-at-home 35 year old child!

But worse than that, this type of behavior costs companies untold sums of cash in the form of mis-directed development costs to sustain a doomed idea for the satisfaction of that idea’s ‘parent.’ There’s enough real work to be done out there and, as a group, we need to focus on what matters and let go of the things that don’t.

Have you seen this behavior in your workplace? Feel free to share your stories here!

LINUXCON, Boston, Mass., August 10, 2010 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that the Qualcomm Innovation Center Inc. (QuIC) is joining the organization as a Platinum member. It joins a short list of existing Platinum members that includes Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, Intel, NEC and Oracle.

QuIC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, is focused on developing software for mobile open source platforms, optimizing open source software for mobile technologies, and enabling developers to build applications easily for the millions of devices powered by Qualcomm’s chipsets.

The use of Linux in mobile and electronic devices has been soaring. Linux is now the underpinning operating system (OS) for Android, MeeGo, and WebOS, among others, and today accounts for one of the highest growth rates of any OS in the device market, according to recent research conducted by ABI Research (“Linux for Mobile Devices, July 2010).

“QuIC’s membership in the The Linux Foundation represents the evolution and growth of the Linux operating system and its increasing use in the mobile and consumer electronics markets,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “We’re very excited to have QuIC join The Linux Foundation at the Platinum level and look forward to continuing our work to advance Linux in this important market.”

“Our Linux Foundation membership is a strategic business move that supports our commitment to providing best-in-class support for all Linux-based operating systems,” said John Boackle, vice president of engineering for QuIC.

The Linux Foundation is helping to facilitate collaboration on technical and promotional activities to support this major growth area for Linux. There are three classes of corporate membership at The Linux Foundation: Silver, Gold and Platinum. The Platinum level of membership is the highest level of membership. QuIC joins an influential group of companies that have exhibited tremendous leadership and support for Linux and, as a Platinum member, will have a seat on The Linux Foundation’s Board of Directors.
